How to Become a Licensed Driver in Michigan

For Michigan residents under the age of 18, there is a two-part driver education curriculum that must be completed before they can become eligible for a driver's license. This curriculum consists of the following:

Part 1 - Michigan GDL Program

In order to be eligible for a Level 1 Graduated Driver License (GDL), the driver must:

  • Complete a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction
  • Complete a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
  • Complete a minimum of 4 hours of observation of driving in a vehicle

Part 2 - Michigan GDL Program

In order to be eligible for a Level 2 Graduated Driver License (GDL), the driver must:

  • Have held a Level 1 GDL for at least 6 months
  • Have acquired at least 50 hours of supervised driving time
  • Have acquired at least 2 hours of night driving time
  • Pass the Road Signs and written Knowledge Test, the Driving Skills Test, and a vision exam

Avoid an Extra Trip to the DMV

If you fail the Road Signs and written Knowledge Test at the Michigan DMV, you are ineligible to re-take the test the same day.
